Melbourne Music Week’s week-and-a-bit celebration of Australia’s flourishing music scene is just around the corner. 2017’s lineup offers up some of the country’s brightest young artists as well as some of the most compelling international characters. This year’s hub is based out of the lush St. Paul’s Cathedral, with the neighbouring carpark taking form as ‘The Carpark’, hosting sets and gigs all day and night. With 250 artists occupying 40 venues spanning the city, here’s our primer on what you need to check out.

01. Sampa The Great + Fortunes. + The Harpoons + Spike F**k + Marcus Whale + Anuraag (DJ Set) + Wahe (DJ Set)
Acclaim and Paradise will be taking over The Cathedral to present Sampa the Great alongside Fortunes., The Harpoons, Spike F**k, and Marcus Whale, with DJ sets from Anuraag and Wahe. Sampa the Great, straight off the back of a European tour, will be returning to Melbourne to headline the show for a night of expression.

MMW is celebrating 40 years of punk and its evolution with their Live Music Safari. Ferdydurke will be home to the enigmatic Miss Blanks on November 23. Her punk-spirited, electro hip-hop coincides with the Safari’s theme seamlessly, and she will be joined by LAY the Mystic, Sovereign Trax and MzRizk.

06. Visionary Sounds: Women Make Music Videos
Rooftop Cinema, The Melbourne Women in Film Festival, and MMW presents Women Make Music Videos, a screening of some of the best music videos produced by women. The sonically and visually immersive evening will showcase some of the country’s best female filmmakers, and highlighting the male-dominated realm of film. Accompanying the screening will be a discussion on music video production. Support your girls.

Australian sound artist Miles Brown will occupy New Guernica for a night of sound and sight. Karina Utomo will be lending vocals to Brown’s synth set. Jaala vs Man & a/n will provide moody, electronic dance, and Misha Grace + Leh YSL will provide performance art, with Leh YSL performing shibari (Japanese rope tying).
